The USS Shreveport, an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, is one of nine U. S. Navy ships that have been stationed in Pasadena, CA. Under the command of Penfield, the VFA-115 has conducted Super Hornet incursions from the ship while sailing through the northern Arabian Sea on a mission against militants in Afghanistan.

Members of the Department of Communications installed the ship's information transfer system aboard the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk (CV-6) and command ship Coronado (AGF-1).The ship also carried AIM-120A Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) for the first time during a deployment. The continuing concern about Iraqi smuggling forced the ship to participate (from 23 to 30 August) in maritime interdiction operations (MIO). The ship's photographers crossed decks with guided missile cruisers Cowpens (CG-6) and Valley Forge (CG-50), Jarrett (FFG-3) and Thach (FFG-4) guided missile frigates, rapid combat support ship Camden (AOE), and HMCS Ottawa to cover operations and delivered more than 25,000 images to support combat group.
