| USS Pasadena and The Foundation ring in the New Year |
|
Return Home from Deployment In December the USS Pasadena returned from a long deployment. They had accomplished their mission with the skill and professionalism of true champions. The crew had made a lot of sacrifices to do an outstanding job for our country, but when the mission was completed, they were the America’s best. With the knowledge and leadership of Commanding Officer, J. P. Heatherington and his officers and chiefs, the mission was successful, and our boat and crew came home safe. The Foundation would like to salute all the crew for an outstanding job. Christmas Decorations for the Boat The Foundation provided Christmas decorations for the boat, which was decorated by the crew the day after it returned from deployment. The decorations included a lighted 12-ft. pop-up Santa Claus, a lighted 12-ft. pop-up snowman, and two lighted 8-ft. pop-up snowmen. Also, over 100' of lighted garland was used to decorate the brow on both sides of the boat. Tim Estes of Fiesta Parade Floats built and donated a 5' x 8' metal-frame lighted American flag to hang on the side of the sail and be lighted at night. This flag was first lit on Christmas Eve. Also, the Boys Republic of Chino donated Delia Robia wreaths to further decorate the boat -- one large wreath for the sail and a small one for the galley. Donations to this effort were Tim Estes, John Fosselman, Skip Josenhans, Steve and Tom Young, Hank Ojendyk, and the Boys Republic of Chino. The USS Pasadena was the best decorated submarine in Pearl Harbor for the holidays! Kick-off Luncheon: A Special Presentation to the Grand Marshall Commander J.P. Heatherington (Commanding Officer of the USS Pasadena) and Master Chief James Miller (Chief of the Boat) presented Justice Sandra Day O'Conner an official plaque with an insignia from the USS Pasadena. This was a very special opportunity for our Navy's best to meet with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
A Tour of Fiesta Parade Floats Fiesta Parade floats provided our guests from the USS Pasadena with a tour of the float barn before the parade. Foundation New Year's Dinner - Ernie's Taco House, Eagle Rock The Foundation New Year's Dinner was a very nice evening, which included cocktails, dinner, Foundation presentations to our guests from the USS Pasadena, and a special show by one of our members. The Foundation presented special plaques of recognition to Commander J. P. Heatherington (Commanding Officer of the USS Pasadena) and Master Chief James Miller (Chief of the Boat) for their continuous service to our country and our boat. Captain J. P. Heatherington spoke to Foundation members and guests; he talked about their recent deployment and how dedicated his crew is in performing their jobs in defense of our country. He also shared how proud he was to be captain of the USS Pasadena, and how much he appreciated everything the Foundation does for his boat and crew. He made us feel very proud to be Americans, having a boat and crew of the caliber of the Pasadena. Anytime, anywhere, we can do the job! Also, The Foundation presented a new digital camera as a gift to the boat. It was a Canon EOS 20D camera with an image stabilizer zoom lens, with case, extra flash cards and batteries. The donors to this gift were Richard Rasmussen, Steve Schultz, Jim Barker, Richard Hotalings, Corky Conzonire, Norm Marshall, Bruce Hayes, Tom Gerfen, Earl Bradley, John Watkins, Wayne Ulmer, Skip Josenhans, and the Pasadena Navy League. A special thank you to Samy's Camera of Pasadena for helping with the pricing of the camera. The entertainment that evening was by one of our Foundation members, Johnny Ace Palmer, World Champion Magician, who performed to the amazement of our guests and dazzled everyone. Now you see it, now you don't, just like a submarine! Also to our surprise, there were three of the six U. S. Air Force parachute team members who were going to be parachuting into the Rose Bowl as the national anthem played before the Rose Bowl game. Air Force met Navy, and it was a fun coincidence and a pleasure to meet them. Deepest appreciation to Ernie Cruz, Foundation Board Member, for hosting this function. Luncheon following Rose Parade The Foundation was honored by some very special luncheon guests:
After a good lunch and quality time with our guests, they were introduced to the Foundation members, and a presentation was made about the Foundation's activities in support of the USS Pasadena. Our guests had a nice warm afternoon after a rainy Rose Parade, and a good time was had by all. Rose Bowl Game The Foundation hosted our Navy guests to the VIP Kick-Off Luncheon and Championship Rose Bowl Football Game. Some of us had a great day (COB from Texas), and some of us did not (those from Southern California). USC did not win, but like a true champion, will be back. At the end of the day, the guests had a good time and we had shown our world-famous Pasadena hospitality to the Navy's best. Special Thank you to the Chief of the Boat As of early January, Master Chief James Miller, Chief of the Boat (COB), is moving on to a new job assignment in Pearl Harbor. The Foundation presented him with a special gift, a Texas-sized silver belt buckle with "US Navy" on the front and engraving on the back as a thank you for all his hard work on our boat as Chief of the Boat (COB). The Foundation wishes him the best of luck in his new assignment for the Navy. Thank you, Chief. Sail with Godspeed always. The Foundation would like to welcome MTCS Chief Jim Lyle as the new Chief of the Boat (COB). We are looking forward to working with him. Crew Member Injured in Accident on Leave One of our sailors, Lance Brune, was seriously injured in an accident on leave in his home town. The Foundation's thoughts and prayers are for Lance and his family at this time. |

Smoking takes place only in port. In June 2005, the Foundation awarded lunches to the top three crew members -- Master Chief James Miller (COB), MM1 Salberry, and YN2 Brown -- in recognition for their efforts in preparing the boat for certification. In September 2005, the Foundation hosted all USS Pasadena wives in Pearl Harbor to a special luncheon at Sam Sneads restaurant at the Navy/Marine golf course. Besides a delicious lunch, all guests received a long-stem red rose, a beautifully decorated box of toffee, Foundation pins, and a Tournament of Roses pin. This gift was made possible by contributions from Timmy Estes, Tommy & Jeannie Wong, Bernard and Eleanor Lim, John Watkins, Skip Josenhans, and Vicki at the World's Best Toffee Company. The Foundation would also like to thank two people in Hawaii for all their work in making the arrangements and making this event special. Also, two crew members were hosted at the USC-Hawaii football game in Hawaii on September 3, where USC kicked off their season going for a third national championship in a row. In October 2005, Jerry Wood, Secretary of the Foundation, donated four dozen Pasadena Fire Department T-shirts. The crew will receive these as a "thank you" for their hard work on the boat. Also, each crewmember will receive a phone card this October. The cards were donated by the Pasadena Foundation and the Navy League. EMC Chief Marvin Wilson is being promoted to Ensign November 1, 2005. He is one of the top crewmembers. The Foundation would like to congratulate him and thank him for his service to our country and our boat. |
